The excitement and curiosity continued on Saturday, October 24, as students in the Emole Futures Initiative's Black Youth in STEM (BYIS) program explored the fascinating world of sound waves, physics and motion through interactive lessons and hands-on experiments.

Now in its fifth week, the program continues to provide young learners with opportunities to develop scientific knowledge, strengthen problem-solving skills, and build confidence in a supportive and engaging environment.

Exploring Sound Waves: Grades 2–4

Our younger students explored how sound travels, what sound waves look like, and how pitch and loudness affect what we hear.

Through engaging discussions and practical activities, students connected scientific concepts to everyday experiences. The highlight was creating their own sound amplifiers using cups, strings and sponges, allowing them to experiment with how sound is produced and transmitted.

Understanding the Laws of Motion: Grades 5–8

Our older students explored the fundamentals of physics, including kinematics, inertia, acceleration and Newton's three laws of motion.

Following an interactive lesson, students put these concepts into practice through a balloon-powered experiment using straws and strings. The activity demonstrated how forces influence movement and helped students connect scientific theory with real-world applications.

Looking Ahead

As the program progresses, we're encouraged to see students becoming more curious, confident and comfortable exploring new ideas and working together.

Through initiatives like Black Youth in STEM, Emole Futures Initiative is helping young people discover their potential and develop skills that can open doors to future opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

We also look forward to celebrating our students, instructors, volunteers and community partners at the Emole Annual Celebration & Graduation on December 12, 2026, at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Central Branch.
